Improving Sleep for the Whole Family

Sleep.  We all know how important it is.  But, in our busy lives, making time to get enough sleep can be a challenge.  Especially when you have a job, children, and so many responsibilities.   Yet, there are many benefits to getting enough sleep.

Did you know that sleep:

  • Boosts the immune system

  • Helps support mood and mental health

  • Improves memory and supports learning

  • Lowers risk of serious health problems

  • Allows you to think more clearly in your day

If you and your child are struggling to get enough sleep, here are some ways to promote healthy sleep preparation for everyone in your household:

  • Structure a simple bedtime routine.  No need to get fancy here.  A warm bath, followed by putting on PJs, brushing teeth, and reading a short story can go a long way to getting everyone ready for sleep at night.

  • Turn off the Screens 2 hours before bedtime.  That’s right, your brain can process what it is seeing and hearing on screens for up to 2 hours after you turn off the screen. This can impact your ability to get enough deep sleep and restorative sleep during the night.

  • Try a family meditation or a few calming yoga moves before starting your nighttime routine.  Studies show that just a few minutes of calming your body and your mind can go a long way to helping your brain turn off at night.

  • Make sure you are getting enough movement every day.  Get up and stretch throughout the day. Even a 10-minute walk outside and away from your work can be extremely helpful.

If you have tried everything and are still having difficulty sleeping, there are professionals who can help!  For children with sleep problems, occupational therapy can be helpful in determining why your child is having difficulty sleeping.  Occupational therapy can also help your family develop healthy patterns to promote overall sleep and well-being.
